About Ashley
Many events in life can be difficult or overwhelming; for children, these events can be even more significant and have longer lasting effects. Individuals who experience trauma or other severe life stressors may be left unable to cope with their emotions and having their daily functioning negatively impacted. I am passionate about bringing hope and healing to children who have been through a traumatic or stressful experience. I walk with my clients on a journey of self-discovery, self-awareness, and healing while processing through the traumatic and stressful events they have experienced. My approach is flexible and tailored to each individual client and often involves some aspect of play or creative expression. Through the therapeutic relationship I am able to help clients feel mastery over their emotions and behaviors rather than being controlled by what they have experienced. My practice currently is focused around children with an emphasis on early childhood (ages 2-8 years).
I am aware that no single approach is always effective for every individual and finding a good fit is important. I have been trained in a range of clinical modalities including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), client-centered and strength-based approaches, trauma- focused approaches (TF-CBT). Currently I practice from a trauma focused lens that includes experiential and child centered play therapy as well as connecting the brain and body for those individuals that are too old for the playroom.
My educational background includes an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Gustavus Adolphus College, a master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Augsburg College, and a certificate in Play Therapy from Bethel University. I have recently obtained a certification in traumaplay. I am currently a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), Registered Play Therapist (RPT), board approved clinical supervisor, and co-owner of Aspire Counseling, LLC. Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked as a treatment coordinator for a residential facility for youth. I also have over ten years of experience providing intensive in-home skills training and outpatient therapy to children and adolescents.
I am currently seeing clients in our Hutchinson office on Monday thru Thursdays.
